Ross & Cromarty War Memorials

DINGWALL - National Hotel

There are six memorials in the town and names are listed in the order -

1 - Civic Memorial at National Hotel
2 - Boer War (Seaforths)
3 - Seaforth (Cambrai)
4 - Sgt John Meikle VC MM
5 - Dingwall Academy
6 - Normandy Veterans

National Hotel, and Seaforth (Boer War) are at the end of High Street, and the Seaforth (Cambrai) is in Station Square. Numbers 1, 2 and 3 are quite close together and any one can be seen from the other two. All three are near Map Reference NH553586 on Sheet 26.

See below for further details on any one.

1) Civic Monument 1914-18 and 1939-1945
Next to the National Hotel and opposite the Clydesdale and Royal Banks on High Street. The Memorial was inaugurated on 4th August 1923 by Ex-Service Men, including Brig Gen Sir Walter Ross of Cromarty, Col A F Mackenzie of Ord, Col Fraser of Leckmeml, and Col T W Cuthbert who commanded the 4th Seaforths in France.

It is built of sandstone. Graceful curves on the sides of the monument lead on to semicircular walls on each side which are terminated by ornamental terminals. An iron fence surrounds the area which is paved and has floral features. The two 1939 - 1945 panels were added later.

2) Seaforth Boer War
Located about a 100 yards away at the junction of High Street and Ferry Road. It is a graceful red sanstone pillar about 30 feet in height.

3) Seaforth (Cambrai)
This imposing and unique monument is a few hundred yards away in Station Square. It is in the form of a wooden cross and has a tale to tell. This one was unveiled by Brigadier General Mackfarlane on Thursday 12th March, 1925.

4) Sgt John Meikle VC MM
Showing the remarkable story of heroism of this soldier of whom the Regiment is justifiably proud.

5) Dingwall Academy
This is a plaque in the new Academy which was originally in the old academy. It is a remarkable document showing former pupils and the Regiments, or battalions they belonged to. It is noticeable that a high number were in the Seaforth 4th Battalion which is Ross-shire's home battalion.

6) Normandy Veterans
The Highlands and Islands Normandy Veterans Association NVA Branch 60 have laid up up their colours and placed their standard in the custody of the Highland Council on Sunday 23rd August, 2009.
