The monument for the Gairloch area is shown in the above photograph. Some Internet searches indicate that there is a second - the USAAF aircrash at Fairy Lochs. In fact, Fairy Lochs are south of Shieldaig, some 5 miles (8 Km) away. The name Gairloch may have been selected because it is the nearest sizeable town. To access USAAF site click here
The above new monument was erected on
this site (see 'old site' in Photo Gallery) because access had been dificult and unsafe at the old one. Highland Council carried out a survey to guage public opinion on this proposal; the result was in favour by 283 to 51.
The new monument was re-dedicated on Saturday, 19th September 2009.
The design of the monument is based on an ancient cross at Scone Palace. On top of the octagonal column is a ??, then a square section with bevelled corners. There are panels on each side of that section. Then there are three stepped octagons of increasing size forming the base.
