Ross & Cromarty War Memorials

Kinellan - Korea 1950-1953

This memorial relates to the involvement of the 1st Battalion of the Black Watch in Korea. Comprising 600 men in four companies, plus reserves, they were involved in many battles, including the 2nd and 3rd Battles of the Hook, main casualities being on the 4th November, 1952. There are 65 names here; total British casualties were 686, so The Black Watch took a disproportionate 10% of that total. For more (amazing) detail see the Black Watch Regimental Museum at ??.

The monument differs from all others on this website in that it was erected by private commission, and not public subscription. Mr Kenny Stewart (1933 - 2016, a local businessman, erected it in memory of his comrades in the Black Watch who died in the Korean War. The base is a stone taken from Mr Stewart's croft which was processed by Sutherland Stonework, Golspie.

Probaly the most picturesque monument on this web-site. It is located on the southeast shore of Loch Kinellan. Coming through Strathpeffer from the east, take the last right-turn (to Kinellan) and proceed down a one-way road (with passing-places) until you reach the 'RoundHouse'. Go right and follow the road until you reach a small car-park from where the monument can be seen. To read Kenny's story - click here.

Map Ref is NH472 575 on Sheet 26.
