Ross & Cromarty War Memorials

NOTES - on using Search

The degree of success of retrieval will depend on how much relevant information there is in the Database for a particular enquiry. That can be very variable, mainly because the monument inscriptions differ so much. For example, Cromarty shows only name, and sometimes rank, no Service given, which will mean they do not show in a search containing that detail. In the case of Cromarty it may be that some of them were in Ross Mountain Battery, because Bombardier and Driver appear so often.

It is suggested that a search takes the form of any one to three terms in the First Term, Second Term, and Third Term boxes. There is no set order for these inputs, so any one can go in any box. Furthermore, any one, or even two, may be blank. The first two characters (when appropriate) should be 'which war', by using the numbers shown in the table below. This avoids possible variability in your 'input'. Following that may be 'location', ie town or district, for example.

Boer Wars - 00
World War I - 01
World War II - 02
Korean War - 03
Northern Ireland - 04
Falklands - 05
Gulf War - 06
Iraq War - 07
Afghanistan - 08
Other Minor Wars - 09

The fatalities rate for these may be seen in 'List of Conflicts' below;
EXAMPLES of enquiries:

00,McKay,A    A,00,McKay    McKay,A,00
would all give the same response, and would give the full entry in the Database as

3295 A McKay Piper

Another example:
Lovat Scouts,Campbell,W
would give the response - '02,19,Sergt Campbell, W W,Lovat Scouts'
which means WW2, Conon Bridge, Sergt W W Campbell Lovat Scots

Fatalities for some conflicts are not on Memorials, yet.
When they become available, such a conflict list will be added in this web-site.
