Ross & Cromarty War Memorials

An Overview of the Site and its Background

English with Gaelic translation

Background

In the two World Wars 1,700,000 of our people died in the Services. Over 900,000 are commemorated on headstones - the remainder have no known grave. There are 2,500 war cemeteries in some 145 countries, all looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) and a staff of about 1,250. Some of these CWGC cemetries are in Ross & Cromarty - Balintore, for example. For a list of British involvement in other wars and conflicts, and those who died, click here. A fitting comment was made by King George V when he visited Flanders in 1922 -

"We can truly say that the whole circuit of the earth is girdled with the graves of our dead ....and, in the course of my pilgrimage, I have many times asked myself whether there can be more potent advocates of peace upon earth through the years to come, than this massed multitude of silent witnesses to the desolation of war"

Site Description

The alphabetical list below also shows place-names in gaelic and is complete showing all (41) War Memorials in Ross & Cromarty. Highland Council maintained 38, that is, keeps them clean, painted, and in good repair structurally. This includes railings and fences, lettering, all stonework, and any moss or weeds removed. Many of them also have attractive floral/shrub layouts.

The appended numbers refer to the relevant Parishes ( see map) in which the monument is situated. Some places are numbered from 50, because they were not maintained by the Council. The Isle of Lewis is included as it was part of Ross & Cromrty during the two wars. The web-site also contains histories of the three regiments, naval/air bases which are specific to Ross & Cromarty, and in no way takes away from the other regiments and services in which our men and women served. There are also a number of photo-galleries, pertinent to these histories.

The site strongly supports Gaelic which was the first language of most of those on the Memorial lists. Both written and spoken word are included such as the excellent item by Highland Council - to hear it click here.

For the text of that (in Gaelic and English) plus an entry into the Gaelic World click here
Another important feature of the site will be that names are included in a searchable database (under development), so it should be possible to extract names with locations and other relevant data.

NOTE: The policy of this web-site is that no names, except those of organisations and Memorial Lists, will appear anywhere. Two exceptions are those who drew up the lists of the 'Iolaire' Disaster, and HMS Natal.
NOTE: Lists of names are exactly as shown on the Monuments, and have been checked. The only variation is that 'full-stops' (ie periods) have been omitted as is current practice today. This means there should be no transcription errors in our copying of names.
NOTE: There is a full list of all the 'conflicts' we have been involved in, to the year 2015, with pointers to further information, click here.
