Ross & Cromarty War Memorials

SHIELDAIG - USAAF

This Memorial Plaque commemmorates the 15 United States Airmen who died in a fatal air crash at Fairy Lochs, the 'place' referred to above, in Ross & Cromarty on 13th June 1945. Parts of the plane were put in place at the site as a form of monument. The plaque is fixed to a stone ediface. See Photo Gallery for picture.

As often happens on the Internet errors are made and that has happened on at least two occasions here. The crash site is not close to Badachro but about 3 miles (5 Km) away, or Gairloch about 5 miles (8 Km), but nearest to Shieldaig, as the map reference shows. Actually, about a mile (1.6 Km) south of Sshieldaig, via a path, and a 20 minute walk. That map reference below is precise and has been checked in my usual thorough manner. An improved photograph of the plaque is being sought.

OS map ref is NG 8082 7116 on Sheet 19.
